Kicking out the Lounge chat with a fun topic! The most funny embarrassing things that happened to me were:
During a rainy ride, my chamois started foaming/bubbling ! I guess the washing machine didn’t rinse it enough! I was on a group ride and you can guess the comments…
Another one was when I was at a cycling camp as a very new cyclist, and I did a snot rocket during the ride and it hit my coach, who came behind me in the diagonal, right on the face! OMG I was so mortified I just wanted to DIE!!! Never again I cleaned my nose without thoroughly checking first!
Embarrassing things I’ve seen happen to other riders:
First group ride ever and I had just learned to clip in a few days before. We’re all stopped in a big bunch at a traffic light to turn left. Light turns green and I fumbled clipping my foot in and almost took down four group members. For some reason everyone stayed far away from me for the rest of the ride
I did a series of free classes for women wanting to try crit racing and we were at a grassy area next to a sidewalk where we were to practice falling. One by one we slowly rode by the fall area and were supposed to tip ourselves over onto the grass and a little hillock. I was so nervous I managed to tip myself over onto the sidewalk instead. But I fell correctly!
I took a class because I was thinking about racing cross and one of the practice exercises was making tight turns. We were all spread out on a grassy area and I managed to execute a tight turn next to a tree, lose my balance, and fall over against the tree where I proceeded to flail around trying to get my feet on the ground so I could stand myself back up.
One time when I was racing I had my phone in my back pocket. Not sure why I had an alarm
Set but during the last lap, the alarm went off and some song was playing for the last 6 mile lap. I couldn’t turn it off. I was quite embarrassed. But acted like it want me.
I don’t have many outside experiences especially involving others so don’t have many stories. But last year in the spring when just getting back outside and in one of the first “long” outside rides, I guess I was tired but was feeling kinda wobbly. We were waiting to cross a VERY busy high speed country road (which causes me anxiety anyway), I was trying to get going again in a brief window to cross and wobbled and just fell over like a sack of potatoes. I obviously looked around quickly to see if anyone saw me. Luckily even my hubby didn’t notice. lol
Ha @bkolden ! That reminds me of a few years ago when I was on my way to work. It was middle of fall and mornings were just dimly lit. I stopped at a traffic light and put my foot down but there was no ground beneath it and I tipped right over. The driver of the car stopped next me saw and rolled down his passenger window and yelled out asking if I was ok. I gave him a wave yes and a very embarrassed smile. Turns out I had stopped right next to a pothole so the ground was a few inches further away than it should have been. Wish I had been lucky enough that no one had seen that!
I definitely had a few toppling over events, especially when I first started using clipless pedals. It’s quite comical how we do go down in what seems like a sack of potatoes in slow motion hahaha!
@Coach_Theia@Stefanie it is quite comical and the times I have fallen were all due to inattention and not remembering to pedal. Sack of potatoes in slow motion. That’s good comical stuff!! lol
Not sure it should be comical but I was chuckling when I was riding with a purple cast on my left arm. Later I rode 50 gravel miles with a rigid splint on my arm. It made me laugh. Haha
When I started mountain biking and didn’t know what I was doing, I flew over the bars and landed on my face. I got a cut above my cheekbone caused by my sunglasses and a black eye. At first, people at work didn’t believe me and they thought someone had punched me in the face. Thankfully I had taken a few photos, before and after the incident with my mountain bike gear on
oh that just reminded me of something else… there was a year I raced cyclocross every weekend for 3 months. I had bruises everywhere on my inner thighs from falling so much with the bike between my legs. I went to my ob/gyn for a check-up, and he said “if I didn’t know you and the Big Guy (referring to my husband of course) for 20 years I would be suspicious of the bike racing reason for these bruises”
Just remembered a funny thing that happened on our recent 50 mile trail ride in South Dakota Black Hills. There was a fair bit of climbing involved which of course I loved. These are not steep climbs but rather long-ish draggy climbs. The final climb was all exposed with few trees covering the trail and it was midday with temps around 93 degrees F. The altitude is around 5-6000 ft there so the sun felt even more intense. I was riding alone (hubby a ways behind) and just going from small shady spots to the next. All of a sudden I get a notification on my watch: “Reflect on how you are feeling right now”!!! HAHA I almost fell off my bike I was laughing so hard.
